Welcome back! So as we go through this, we are looking at ways how we can manage our time so that we end up actually doing more in less time. And one way of doing this is using time management. Using time management skills Yes, here are some tips that you can use in order to make sure that you use your time effectively.
The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that you plan your day the night before, this is one of the techniques I learned when I was doing a teacher training program. And what it was, was that one of the tips that was given is to make sure that you plan your lesson, the night before, the night before, and the reason for that was that if something happens the night before, at least you have got your lesson ready and the following day you can go into class and manage to teach. Because you’ve got your lesson plan already prepared. But in this case, in the case of what you’re working on, it’s fine to prepare or to plan, to plan your work for the day just the night before. The reason for that is that if you think about it. By planning in advance, what it means is that once you get up early in the morning, you know exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, so you go straight to undertaking those tasks. That’s the reason for it.
The next thing that you need to think about is to prioritize your work, so you have got certain things that are more important than other things. You remember we talked about the 80-20 rule. The Pareto Principle, what you can do is pick the 20 percent of the items that have this value of work that is most important and if you can do it that way, you can narrow it to just a few items that you need to tackle for the day. And once you’ve got that list, you might end up with at least we’re talking about 20 percent. So 20 percent is one fifth, so one in five. So you might end up with five items that need tackling. And then what you need to do is to review those five tasks. Look at them and narrow it down, narrow it down to just one task. That is most important for that particular day. I would say that what you need to do is just pick the top three. So you’ve got three tasks in order of priority. And focus on just one task at a time.
The third tip I want to mention is the chunking technique, where you look at some of the tasks that would actually require a long period of time to complete. So what you would actually do is make sure that you create some chunks that can be completed in a single day or within a certain time slot. So, for example, it could be the rest of the morning you’d be working at part of that task and make sure that it can be completed within that amount of time. So that’s the chunking aspect of it. And where you have got some work that spans for a period of time. What do you need to do is make sure that you create a program? The proper program as to when different aspects of the tasks are going to be completed.
So in this case, for example, if we look at you are preparing a submission for your final assessment. So what you would actually be looking at is when do I complete the summary of experience? When do I complete the case study? When do I complete a draft presentation that I’m going to be making? So you have got these on the program and then you know exactly when it is supposed to be completed. And that way you can establish whether you are the head of the program or behind the program. So those are some of the tips on time management techniques to make sure that you have more done in a given day and at the same time serving some time, because we all have 24 hours in a day. And you get more work done by the way you manage your time. My name is Knight Khonje, Thank you for listening. See you later. Thank you!
